Cutting Edge for East London
Showhouse Magazine, July 2008The Thornsett Group is to undertake a joint venture with The Worshipful Company of Carpenters on their site at Lett Road, near the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.
Planning permission has been granted for 64 apartments including a mix of luxury three-bedroom penthouses, one- and two- bedroom apartments and ten affordable units.
The project has been named "The Edge" to reflect the design of the building which has a ten storey tower and cantilevered section projecting out over the lower floors, appearing like a large television monitor and certain to become a well known focal point for those approaching Stratford. The cantilevered section shelters a communal roof terrace which complements the internal courtyard around which all the apartments are wrapped.
The section 106 agreement stipulates that the ten affordable apartments will be made available to trainee carpenters and other key workers in the carpentry trade, some of whom attend The Worshipful Company of Carpenters’ Building Crafts College, which is located nearby. Thornsett Group will also pay £1.29 million towards refurbishment of the nearby Carpenters’ Estate, improvement works which it is hoped will be completed in time for the Olympics.
The Edge has been designed by award winning architects, Proctor and Matthews, who are well known for their urban regeneration projects. The penthouses will feature mezzanine floors and double height ceilings and most of the apartments will have their own outside space with many having views over the Olympic Park.
Beradette Cunningham, Director, Thornsett Group said: "The apartments will be particularly appealing to those working in the Olympic Village, as well as yound professionals and couples wishing to benefit from the exciting regeneration in the area. The scheme will benefit hugely from the infrastructure planned for the 2012 Olympics, especially transport improvements."
The project is expected to be completed by July 2009. The apartments will be available for sale off plan from 2009, with prices for a one-bedroom apartment starting from £250,000.
