81 Homes Planned At Eyesore Site

Milford & West Wales Mercury, 5th July 2007

A new multi-million housing development of 81 flats may soon be coming to the county.

If the plans are approved one and two bedroom flats will be built along Victoria Road past the roundabout at Victoria Hill in the form of several apartment blocks with parking spaces. The application also includes a provision for 15 flats as affordable housing.

As part of the project developers Thornsett Structures plans to restore the grade II listed Old Quay Store and demolish the boarded up Victoria Filling Station.

Thornsett director, Bernadette Cunningham, said that as the plans had only just been submitted she could not comment on the exact cost of the project or the price of individual flats. She said: "Parts of the area like the disused garage have become an eyesore and I think local people will be glad to see them replaced with something that will be of benefit to the town."

"This is not the first project we have had in West Wales, we like the area and the people. We plan to use local architects, solicitors and builders. We want this development to be a gateway to Milford Haven from the docks."

She rejected fears that these flats would be bought out as holiday homes by people who lived away.

Milford county councillor and Milford Haven Plus member Rhys Sinnett said: " We know that there is a real problem with affordable housing in Milford Haven so there is a need for projects like this but I would not like to see the rest of the flats priced beyond the reach of local people. Anything that tidies up that area of the town and meets the needs of local people sounds like a good thing, but I would need to have a close look at the application, an particularly the traffic implications, before I could say more."

He said his response to the proposed development was a “cautious welcome”.
